1. THE PURPOSE WAS TO DEMONSTRATE HIS LOVE.
13:1—2 — …And as He had loved those who were His own in the world, He loved them to the last
and to the highest degree.

16 This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us.
This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for
ourselves.
2. THE PURPOSE WAS TO MODEL HUMILITY.
13:3—5 — …3 [That] Jesus, knowing (fully aware) that the Father had put everything into His
hands, and that He had come from God and was [now] returning to God,
4 Got up from supper, took off His garments, and taking a [servant’s] towel, He
fastened it around His waist.
5 Then He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and
to wipe them with the [servant’s] towel with which He was girded.
